Kākano is a single-storey home within a contemporary new development, designed around the varying dynamics of family life in Aoteroa. At the heart of the design is a central breezeway, a transitional spine that bridges the two segments of the house while drawing light, air, and landscape throughout the home.

The northern segment forms the entry, extending into private bedrooms before progressing into the breezeway. The breezeway spans across two courtyards on each side; the eastern courtyard is arranged with an open deck and water feature to be used as a social outdoor living space. Inversely, the western courtyard is more secluded with an emphasis on gardening and contemplation. This flows into the southern segment: an open-plan living area where kitchen, dining, and lounge are brought together as a shared volume that extends seamlessly into the eastern courtyard. Kākano’s continuous connection allows the home to expand and contract in response to family life, supporting both intimate daily routines and larger social occasions.
