Waikopua

Waikopua occupies the crest of a hill in Whitford, looking north towards Rangitoto and beyond, where the rural landscape becomes the defining presence. Conceived as a retreat from the city, the home is an exercise in quietness, a composition of solid form, filtered light and open space.

Its monolithic skin of autoclaved aerated concrete panels establishes a sense of permanence against the expansive landscape. Within, the architecture opens and contracts around a sequence of spaces: a double-height living and dining volume and clear-storey windows that capture changing light.

Courtyards, sheltered patios and private decks extend the home outward, creating a gradual transition between enclosure and landscape. An external stair connects the upper level to the sky beyond, further dissolving the distinction between interior and exterior.

The result is a home shaped less by its boundaries than by its relationship to place, private and introspective, yet continuously connected to the landscape beyond.
